#52 -- Woken from the Nightmare

[His handwriting's pretty messy since it still hurts to write.]

Here's a tip for all you new kids - don't ever leave your journal behind. Ever ever. Or you may get lost in the Wilderness alone for 3 weeks (or more!) with no way to ask for help and no way out.

And if you do, then all you can do is hope the Adventurers do their job - and they do; try thanking 'em sometime - 'cuz it'll have to be one of them who drags your sorry ass back out of there.

[Not that he's bitter about the experience, of course not. He's been here long enough to know better and not make these mistakes, you know.]

[A shrug, a slightly uneasy one.] And sometimes, we don't have any choice but to change. At least, that's how it feels to me. [He'd been 'forced' to change, by the decisions he chose to make. So in a way, he had chosen to change...] ...not that I mind.

[He smiles, quick and faint.] Hmmm, not having memories will do that. You think something's one way, but one memory crystal can reveal the truth, or the lie. [Not exactly speaking from experience, more like what he's seen in other people, and what conclusions his own ponderings on the matter have drawn.]

I hear that.

[He was spared from the urge to explain himself by the food arriving.] Alright, now you can finally try this stuff! [The waitress then set his beer down with some knives and Cloud's water.

He started cutting into the Meat pizza slice, then the Supreme slice, next the Hawaiian, and lastly the dessert pizza.] You like any of these better and we'll just get more, no prob.

[Cloud took a sip of his water, inspecting the various triangle-shaped pieces of food that had been set down before the two of them. 'Meat' and 'Supreme' were easy enough to identify, but he wasn't sure what 'Hawaiian' was in the first place, so it could be either of the two left.

As Smoke finished cutting through (what he was pretty sure was) the meat slice, Cloud picked up half of it, raised an eyebrow ever so slightly, and took a bite.]

...not bad.

[Smoke takes his Supreme half-slice up in one hand, nodding adamantly at it as he munches. He isn't quite finished chewing before he speaks again.]

They put all the good vegetables on this one. This one's my favorite. I'll probably get another slice or two of it.

[Cloud munches his way through the slice, then picks up the supreme one. He takes a bite, chewing slowly.

He doesn't quite see what's so great about this kind of food. It's interesting, certainly, different from anything else he's eaten, and it's filling. But it's... just food.]

Mmmm. [A pause while he eats most of the slice.] Is this your favorite kind of food?

Not really, but I like meat and fish, so this stuff's good.

I'd take a stewpot or grilled meat on rice any day, though.

[He goes for the dessert pizza] This stuff though - it's kind of like a pie, but better. If you're into sweet stuff.

[Cloud 'hmm'ed softly. That all sounded like things he was used to eating... was Smoke from the same world as he was? It was possible. Then again, it seemed like anything was, in Edensphere.

He eyed the last one even more warily, now that Smoke had clarified just how it was 'sweet,' and reached for the other slice he hadn't tried yet, the Hawaiian. One bite and he immediately noticed the difference between this and the other two.

Pulling one of the yellow lumps out of the cheese, he inspected it closely.]

...what kind of fruit is this? I've never tasted anything like it.

You know I hadn't either before I got here and started blending drinks. It's called pineapple. Crazy-looking fruit, too. Got all these hard spikes on the outside, so you gotta carry it carefully or by the leaves and stem up top. I never did get the hang of opening 'em up - I just leave that to other people.

[He keeps munching on the dessert pizza.] And this one has apples in it, with like... pie filling I think, and big ol' cinnamon chunks.

[Cloud 'hmmm'ed and popped the fruit into his mouth, talking around it.] S'good.

[He was a little surprised at how much he liked this particular kind; the fruit seemed to add something special to it, a particular sort of sweetness without being too sweet. It disappeared faster than the other slices.

And then he was left with the final one, the apple pie pizza. He picked it up, a little warily, and took a small bite.

...it wasn't as bad as he'd feared, but it was still too sweet.]

Hmmmm...

[They continued making small talk a bit longer, and Smoke grabbed two more slices of his favorite pizza flavors. Then, he paid the bill, left a tip, and headed out with a wave to Cloud.]

I should head back to the bar. Kagerou's probably got a ton of things for me to catch up on yet.
