#48 - Newest Accessories: it brings out the color in my eyes, don't you think?

Did I miss the part of the party with sticky confetti? Because I keep trying to throw this little red piece away and it always manages to cling to my finger or pants or something so I can't. Thought it was time for a new lighter cuz the confetti piece wouldn't burn, but my cigs all light fine, so I dunno what's up.

On that note - thanks for my birthday present, bro. Should last me... awhile. Do I get to keep the bag? Did you make it?

[QL works -- And we don't lose too much attention from wrapping up the other log XD; Should Smoke just wander over to Serenity or something?]

[That'll work - Rain's there most of the time, since he both works and lives there. XD]

[Of course the bit of red paper came along for the ride. Smoke couldn't help that, and figured Rain would want to see it anyway. He was glad that the snow was gone now - it made the trek out to Serenity that much easier to justify on a whim.]

[Rain didn't bother responding; he simply closed his journal and set it aside, then threw on a warm haori - it was still cool, even if not as cold as it had been - and headed out the back door and around to the front of the Spa. He leaned back against the wall, arms folded, and waited.]

And Lin thinks we're friends. Crazy girl.

[He shook his head.]

So what's this about red paper?

Mm. [Rain wasn't taking time out of his day to talk about what Lin thought. He cut right to the chase.]

Let's see it. [Best to make sure it's the same thing before saying anything. If it was, he knew Smoke would definitely have it with him.]

[Smoke dug into his pocket and let the paper stick to the top of his index finger.]

And still warm. [He turned it over every which way looking for writing.] Don't see any words or symbols or anything else on it yet.

[Rain looked closely at the paper. It certainly appeared to be the same thing. All right then.]

It took a few weeks for them to appear. [He paused, glanced around, and lowered his voice a bit.] When they did, it said 'admit one' followed by a date.

Admit one? [Smoke repeated, looking down at the paper.] I heard about 'admit two' before... [He scrunched his face up] Wonder if it's the same thing.

I've heard of that one, too. Like I said, there are at least two different types. I believe the other gives a location rather than a date. [Rain hadn't gotten much out of Lin on the matter, but she'd mentioned a location and nothing else of note, so it was a reasonable conclusion that it was one or the other.]

[He hesitated briefly, before continuing.] On that date, I was taken to the fourth floor.

[Smoke let out a sharp bark of laughter] Oh really - like a ticket into an exclusive club, huh?

D'you mean like regular Fourth Floor see-something-that-looks-familiar, or the kind that shows you weird stuff you aren't familiar with at all?

[Rain just shrugged.] I don't know what location. That's what you'd have to ask Lin about. [He thoroughly doubted she'd tell Smoke any more than she'd told him, of course, or that Smoke would even ask her. Rain said it merely so the other man would know where he'd gotten his information from.]

I was shown a memory. [He glanced off to the side, not comfortable with discussing the details of that experience.]

So normal kind, sounds like. [Smoke wasn't about to ask - point was Rain seemed to recognize what he saw, unlike when Smoke had been trapped.]

Trying to get any kind of useful information out of Lin is about as easy as guessing the next wave of weirdness to hit us courtesy of the Sphere. [He groaned as he rubbed his shoulder from the sudden tenseness. Even thinking about Lin did that to him.] Pass on that.

[He gave Rain a confused look.] Just how the hell'd you get her to tell you in the first place?

...If that's normal. [Rain had no frame of reference for the fourth floor, as that was the only time he'd been there, and he'd never discussed it with anyone else who had.]

[He scowled - that first encounter with Lin was something else he didn't like discussing.] She asked about it in the journals as you did. I offered her information on mine in exchange. [...And got shafted.]

And she still hates your guts. Maaaaan. [Smoke shook his head in sympathy.]

Anyway, thanks. [He held out his hand to shake, looking like he was ready to leave.] Guess I just gotta wait this out.

[At first, Rain just looked at Smoke's extended hand. While he knew what a handshake was, he hadn't been expecting one. After a moment though, he clasped it.] Aa.

[In a way, it was rather amusing to Smoke that while he'd claimed to Lin that he and Rain weren't friends, it was nice to know they could at least be this civil to each other. Didn't have to hang out, didn't have to trust each other with personal secrets - just enough respect to get shit done and do a little digging around in the Sphere's dirty laundry.]

[Smoke gave Rain's hand a firm shake, then raised two fingers in a wave goodbye as he turned to leave.] Seeya whenever.

[And he walked away, simple as that.]
